Dear Mom: It's Okay

March 29, 2016 1 Comment

While being a mom is absolutely the most amazing and rewarding thing I have ever done, it is also the most frustrating and difficult thing.
It’s everything I expected, and nothing I expected all at the same time. If that is even possible
As I think about myself, and I watch my friends navigate this journey called motherhood, I just want to say one thing “It’s Okay”
And I don’t just want to say it…I want to shout if from the rooftops….somewhere that every mom in the world can hear it and know that they aren’t alone
On the days when you have had it and want to throw in the towel “It’s okay”
When you don’t get the dishes done for an entire week “It’s Okay”
When you actually lose  it, and have to lock yourself in the bathroom or closet “It’s okay”
When your husband comes home from work, and you’ve been in the same spot on the couch since he left, because your baby will tolerate nothing else “It’s Okay”
When you want to scream if you get 1 more piece of unsolicited parenting advice “It’s Okay”
When you take time for yourself, and feel nothing but worry and guilt “It’s Okay”
When you don’t put on makeup, or take a shower, or change your clothes because everyone else’s shower comes first “It’s Okay”
There will be days when your kids come before your relationship….”It’s okay”
There will be days when you feel like a failure…”Its Okay”
When you make your own choices, even though the entire world is telling you “you’re doing it wrong”…..It’s really okay
You’re children won’t remember the messy hair, or the dark circles under your eyes. They won’t remember the times that you had to walk out the door the minute your husband walked in, they won’t remember that you wore the same shirt for 3 days in a row, because you were doing something for someone else all day and never got around to changing.
But they will remember that you were there, that you held them, and played with them, and told them you loved them. They will remember that you showed them it is okay to mess up, and it’s okay to apologize and that humans aren’t perfect.
They will remember that smiled and you laughed with them. They will remember that you were there
So on those days when you feel like you can’t do it anymore, that you will lose it if you have to change one more poopy diaper or you hear “mom!” one more time, or your house looks a tornado went through it…..come back and read this and remind yourself “It’s Okay!”

So true and spot on! I became a mom on August 1, and I have to remind myself that sometimes it’s ok when things don’t go exactly how I planned. Thanks for this reminder!

    • When I picked "Be Brave" as my word for this year, I didn't realize I was asking the universe for an actual challenge. (And based on what I've gathered from many friends, I wasn't alone) But, as the year comes to a close, I feel like I met my goal. And while there were some wonderful moments of this year, like starting a new job, growing my breastfeeding support group, and becoming an aunty twice more. But my anxiety was worse than it's ever been (admitting that isn't fun) and watching my mother in law battle brain cancer and Grandpa fight through a massive heart attack, has been hard. Needless to say, I'm ready for a new start with these little humans and their daddy. See ya later 2018 👋

2019, please be kind to us 🙏

    • My top 9 of 2018 was an honest look at Motherhood. This was the year I found my voice, took opportunities outside of my comfort zone, and truly met my goal of being brave. I'm so glad and grateful you are all following along. Excited to see what 2019 has in store. Happy New Year!

    • I have been pretty open about my struggles with anxiety and depression. It's not fun or easy, and I often wish it wasn't part of my story, but it is. And through sharing, I can only hope that even one of you feels less alone. If you need a little extra support, I share daily affirmations in my stories every morning, I hope you'll follow along.
Here's to today being a good day, even in it's imperfections ❤️ #musingsonmotherhood #thisismotherhood #this_is_postpartum #dailyaffirmations

    • Back to reality today and totally experiencing a holiday "hangover" We will be cleaning out and choosing toys and clothes to donate, since the kids got new stuff for Christmas. It's important to me that my kids be involved in this process, as it is their stuff and I want them to learn the value of service. Not taking our decorations down yet, I'm not ready to let the twinkle lights go ✨✨ #musingsonmotherhood #lighttheworld
    • Wishing you a very Merry Christmas. May your heart and home be full of love ❤️🎄
