Creating a Safe Sleep Space with Newton Baby

August 27, 2018 3 Comments

I was gifted this mattress from Newton Baby in return for my honest review. All photos, thoughts and opinions are genuinely my own. As always, I only share products I truly love and use with you guys

People who say they want to sleep like a baby…probably don’t have one

My son (he’s my first) was not a good sleeper, to say the least. Being new parents, we tried all the things with him. Pack n play, rock n play, sleep training, crib…doing a dance over him each night (I kid, I kid). But really, if someone suggested it, I tried it. Co-sleeping was the one thing that kinda “worked” with him, but I was so afraid of it. mostly afraid of judgement and a little nervous about potential risks, that I never actually did it until he was much older.
All this to say, when Cora was born, we decided that we would Co-Sleep and room share with her, through her first year. We educated ourselves on safe co-sleeping and bed sharing, and took all the steps to make sure that her sleep space was safe (no blankets, pillows, firm mattress, she was exclusively breastfeeding etc..) and it was the option that worked best for us. There are many opinions out there, and of course not one thing works for every family or situation (never mind that here we are two years later and JUST now moving her out of our bed). But, I think something we can all agree on, is that we want a healthy and safe sleep space, for our children.

Is what we sleep on really that important?

I had no idea, that some traditional foam and spring mattresses were made with glues and chemicals that could effect our health. Some even contain latex, which is a pretty common allergen, and many of the foams used are actually quite flammable.  I can only imagine all the dirt and dust that gets trapped inside of those things, as well. Probably not stuff, that I really want my little ones to be breathing in every single night.

This mattress is actually 90% air, pretty cool! And there is no foam, glue, latex or springs.  I was really excited to learn about the features of this Newton Baby mattress, not only is the cloud pattern on the cover adorable but its also recyclable, which is a perk for us as we work toward a more sustainable home.
And, quite possibly my favorite feature is that it is 100% washable.  The cover is machine washable, and the inside can be wiped or sprayed down. I’m just thinking of how amazing that is going to be during potty training! And its super easy to get the cover on and off, just a quick zip. There’s no struggling to stuff in a little cover or misshaping, because of the woven-air core.

Neither of my kids have been tummy sleepers, we always put them on their back and they stay that way. But so many like to roll over once they can, and I know that is a big worry for many mamas. This mattress being completely breathable takes some of that load off. There is breath-ability and airflow through the cover and entire core.  Tests show that a baby gets 97% more airflow on this mattress, compared with a traditional foam mattress. Its also a 2-stage mattress, which means it is firm enough for an infant but supportive into toddler years.

The Breath to Believe Challenge

This mattress does have a little bit higher price point, so its an investment for sure. But it is going to last you a long time and you are definitely getting what you pay for. And if your a skeptic, Newton Baby has a 100 night guarantee, if you don’t love it, you can return it for a full refund.

Cora has been sleeping on this mattress for a few weeks now, and I can easily say we love it. She sleeps great, and in fact she spends a lot of her awake time here too, reading a book or playing with her dolls. She is always asking “can I go get in my bed?” I thought the novelty would wear off quickly, but she seems to be a fan. Her being comfy and wanting to be in her bed has been a huge transition from co-sleeping to being in her own room. And knowing that she has a safe sleep space has made the transition a little easier on me. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss her sleepy snuggles and little baby snores a little bit. But lets be real, I enjoy not getting kicked in the back a lot more!

This mattress sounds awesome! SIDS is always such a worry. I love how you’ve decorated her little space.

This looks awesome! I love that it’s washable, recyclable, and breathable! So, basically perfect! I’m going to pass this info on to expecting mamas!

    • When I picked "Be Brave" as my word for this year, I didn't realize I was asking the universe for an actual challenge. (And based on what I've gathered from many friends, I wasn't alone) But, as the year comes to a close, I feel like I met my goal. And while there were some wonderful moments of this year, like starting a new job, growing my breastfeeding support group, and becoming an aunty twice more. But my anxiety was worse than it's ever been (admitting that isn't fun) and watching my mother in law battle brain cancer and Grandpa fight through a massive heart attack, has been hard. Needless to say, I'm ready for a new start with these little humans and their daddy. See ya later 2018 👋

2019, please be kind to us 🙏

    • My top 9 of 2018 was an honest look at Motherhood. This was the year I found my voice, took opportunities outside of my comfort zone, and truly met my goal of being brave. I'm so glad and grateful you are all following along. Excited to see what 2019 has in store. Happy New Year!

And through sharing, I can only hope that even one of you feels less alone. If you need a little extra support, I share daily affirmations in my stories every morning, I hope you'll follow along.

    • Back to reality today and totally experiencing a holiday "hangover" We will be cleaning out and choosing toys and clothes to donate, since the kids got new stuff for Christmas. It's important to me that my kids be involved in this process, as it is their stuff and I want them to learn the value of service. Not taking our decorations down yet, I'm not ready to let the twinkle lights go ✨✨ #musingsonmotherhood #lighttheworld
    • Wishing you a very Merry Christmas. May your heart and home be full of love ❤️🎄
